Mr
Irvin was born on the 7th of May 1940 and started as
an assistant editor in British films. He began making
documentaries in the '70s, and in 1980 helmed his first
feature, the Frederick Forsyth adaptation The Dogs of
War. A sturdy if impersonal craftsman, Irvin also helmed
Fred Astaire's final film, the horror tale Ghost Story;
the romantic comedy Turtle Diary, scripted by Harold
Pinter; and the Vietnam War drama Hamburger Hill.
