A self-proclaimed inside source reveals the latest rumor rumblings behind Predator 3 and Arnold's possible involvement.

David Calabrues:

Hello to all of you Arnold fans, who, like me, visit thearnoldfan everyday to check up on the latest Schwarzenegger news.

Well I thought I'd let you know that I've got in on a little 20th Century Fox project apparently in the works. Now whoever made up THE ROCK playing Schwarzenegger's son up against the original Predator's son, that was all a scam - I'm sure they're just spreading rumors of their own. Here's what I know officially.

A new debut screenwriter, Matthew J. Virchow, is helming the PREDATOR III script. Jim Thomas and John Thomas (Predator, Predator 2) aren't going to write a third film because they have more "important" projects, as they claim, than rather doing another sequel. They feel that the second film didn't do that well, and they don't want to risk another flop at the box office. They also made remarks about an ALIENS VS. PREDATOR script being previously written, and so they were waiting for that film to be made, but it didn't happen. They were set to edit the script after it was turned down by FOX the first time, and they were also going to serve as executive producers for the film. FOX still turned it down, and the brothers felt that the PREDATOR was a previous generation action film that today's audience wouldn't be interested in as much.

Matthew J. Virchow, who've I've met with, has shown me some of the third script, and basically gave me some of the details surrounding it. FOX is going to take a look at it apparently. Matthew is searching for an executive to take in the script. FOX has said themselves, after knowing the script has been written, that they don't feel it is a winning project that would be as attractive as the 1987 original. (Remember that they haven't read the script yet) But, if a major director such as RIDLEY SCOTT (who directed the original ALIEN film), was interested in directing, they might consider it. After JOHN McTIERNAN's latest flops (Rollerball, 13th Warrior, The Thomas Crown Affair), they don't feel he's a suitable director for action films anymore. That's why JOHN hasn't released a film in so long from FOX studios, which released DIE HARD, PREDATOR, DIE HARD 3, and other projects of his- it's because he hasn't had a hit film since 1995's DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE. Right now, the only director mentioned to be interested in the third film anyway is little known director- ANTONY HOFFMAN who previously directed 2000's RED PLANET, which was a science fiction thriller about a stranded group of astronauts who discover Atmosphere on Mars.

Well, Matthew is very anxious about his new genius script. For you eager fans who rumored about Kurt Russell taking a lead role- that is false. The only actor rumored is Arnold Schwarzenegger, considering his character Dutch returns as the hardcore soldier. Thankfully, Matthew gave me a few details on the plot.

PREDATOR 3 plot:

In the present year, a family of predators make a daring attempt to retaliate on the humans. After a large and secret American Space Station is shut down, U.S. astronauts and mechanical space engineers are sent to check up on the problem. They mysteriously don't return. There is no available contact. It's as if they'd vanished. The only evidence of struggle that the United States government has of the vanishing, is a shot of the space station's security cameras, showing a man lying there dead, and a trail of what appears to be green liquid. Highly trained U.S. marines, led by Alan 'Dutch' Schaefer, are sent to investigate because of suspicion of enemy attack. When they arrive, there is no appearance of any enemies, only a mutilated crew. But lurking around the station is a family of hunters, more lethal than ever before. With no communication or radio of any kind, Dutch must face off with his dreadful nightmare of the past, again. The only difference this time, is that there are several alien hunters who are in it for revenge. It isn't any sport this time.

He didn't provide me with any scenes, other than one page of dialogue, when Dutch is describing the hunter of the past... going back on previous memories.

It will be interesting to see if this project is made. The plot sounds to be suspenseful. It wouldn't surprise me if somehow they even ended up on the predators' planet (which has been rumored). But Virchow is very enthusiastic about this project. We'll just have to wait until Matthew makes some connections with FOX. But we're going to have to wait a while for the film to be put into action. It isn't coming out in Summer, 2003 as rumored. Virchow wants Arnold Schwarzenegger to return as Dutch, and says that if he doesn't return, he isn't going to continue the project. That's the latest news on PREDATOR III.

Thanks for your time folks at THEARNOLDFANS!

Sincerely,
David Calabrues
