Schwarzenegger.com reports: At 10:00 am on Tuesday, October 1, 2002 teachers, parents and education leaders representing more than 1.5 million members announced their support for Proposition 49's after school campaign. Arnold, Prop. 49's architect and sponsor, began the conference at Cahuenga Elementary School in Los Angeles with a message to education leaders. LAUSD Superintendent Roy Romer, CTA board member Paul Markowitz, and California PTA President Jan Domene, among others, joined Arnold at the conference. As usual, Schwarzenegger.com was on the scene to get this late-breaking video. KPIX News channel reports: Arnold Schwarzenegger brought his Hollywood charisma to Martinez Thursday to push for his pet project on the November ballot. Arnold Says He Won't Run for Governor Proposition 49 would fund after-school programs for kids. "It's between 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock that are the peak hours that kids get involved in juvenile crime, teenage pregnancy, gang related violence," Schwarzenegger said. "It's also between 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock that kids get involved in drugs, and smoking and alcohol." By now you may have seen the TV ads for Proposition 49, funded in large part by a $1 million contribution from Schwarzenegger himself. But not everyone is happy with the proposal, which would add another state-ordered mandate to the budget during surplus years. In fact, the two big teachers' unions are split on it. "I am so excited that the most important teachers' union, the CTA, has endorsed our initiative," Schwarzenegger said. "I obviously at the same time understand that not everyone will agree with me -- not everyone will agree with the way we want to fund this." Schwartzenegger wouldn't comment on rumors that his initiative drive is part of a warm-up for him to run for governor in four years. When asked if he saw any contradiction between the anti-crime and anti-violence message of Proposition 49 and the movies that made him a Hollywood star, he had a vague answer. "In fact, what is so wonderful about my movies is that -- by the way we have on DVD Collateral Damage. Make sure to buy it," Schwarzenegger said. ---------- ![]() |
