E! Online's Lia Haberman reports:
Glad-handing Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to reach out to the people of California,
just not the type who sneak around his Brentwood estate.
A prowler, caught trespassing on the grounds of Casa Schwazenegger this past weekend,
has been charged with two counts of trespassing and one count each of prowling, vehicle
tampering and petty theft, according to cops.
On Tuesday, Canadian cat burglar Richard Sathianathan pleaded innocent to the charges
during a court appearance, reports the Associated Press.
Still, the 32-year-old, who has no known address according to the city attorney's
office, remains in jail on $50,000 bail.
Sathianathan was first spotted at the actor-turned-political candidate's house on Saturday,
where he allegedly jumped a fence and proceeded to steal $400 worth of items from the
family's cars.
"We got a call that security for Arnold Schwarzenegger (news) was detaining a trespassing
suspect," police officer Jason Lee (news) told the AP.
However, when cops arrived at the estate they didn't book Sathianathan because police
officers must be present when a misdemeanor takes place for them to make an arrest.
Sathianathan wasn't so lucky on Sunday when officers arrested him after he allegedly
returned to the scene of the crime.
It's been a mixed week for Schwarzenegger. His sitdown with Oprah Winfrey on Monday helped
the talk show score its best season premiere ratings in five years and also softened the
Terminator's image considerably.
Aided by his missus, Maria Shriver, the action star attempted to appeal to the show's heavily
female audience with family man anecdotes, like how Ah-nuld brings Maria coffee every morning
and tells her daily how much he appreciates the role she plays as wife and mother.
But his appearance may all have been for naught. The same day Schwarzenegger made nice on
Oprah, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (news - web sites) delayed California's
gubernatorial recall vote due to a debate over outdated voting machines. Judges continue to
mull the issue, putting the October 7 election in jeopardy.
