Variety tells us today that Warner Bros. Pictures has set Boaz Yakin to write and direct Conan the Barbarian, an ALL NEW take on the Robert E. Howard-created character.

WB is eyeing an early 2007 production start for the film, which will be produced by Irving Azoff, Jon Jashni, Richard Alexander and Akiva Goldsman. Peter Sederowsky and Fredrik Malmberg of Paradox Entertainment, the company that controls rights to the Howard estate.

Yakin, best known for directing Remember the Titans, has been a fan of the Howard CONAN series since childhood and came up with a take that impressed the studio.

Reinventing a new Conan film instead of doing "King Conan: Crown of Iron" is, of course, a violent crime. Conan fans will no doubt be left with a new star; an embarrassing replacement and an actor without the original epic physic and charisma of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Let's just pray to Crom that WB and Boaz Yakin gets this film right...and that Arnold gives us an awesome cameo! Perhaps Conan's father? If you're listening Boaz Yakin - write that in!
