Richard Fleischer, a film director who never became a household name despite working with some of Hollywood's biggest stars on hits like "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Fantastic Voyage," died early Saturday at the Motion Picture and Television Country House and Hospital in Los Angeles. He was 89.

Fleischer, best known by Arnold Fans for his work as a director of Conan the Destoyer and Red Sonja, died due to complications of an upper respiratory infection, said his son Mark. Fleischer's mythical epic Conan the Destroyer (1984) was one of the films that made Arnold Schwarzenegger a superstar, and he followed it with another vehicle for the former bodybuilder, Red Sonja (1985). Schwarzenegger described him as "an extraordinary director".
