Exclusive: Expendables 3 Composer In the Running to Score Terminator?!

While I was speaking with Brian Tyler, Expendables 1, 2 and 3 composer at the Hollywood premiere, we talked about the music he chose to give each of these lead action stars but we also talked about his upcoming projects. Tyler shared with TheArnoldFans what his next huge action film he’ll compose and which future Arnold films he’d consider. While I thought was just throwing in the idea for him to do the Terminator soundtrack, he informed me he did have at least a foot already in the door.

Before I talked Terminator: Genisys with Tyler, I asked if he would reteam with EX3 director to composer Patrick Hughes’s THE RAID remake and then our talks turned to the Avengers!

“Yes, I love the Raid series; It’s just the coolest,” says Tyler. “So I’d love it, if it all fits in. I’m off to do the Avengers 2 next. Yes, I’m scoring it. I was just on set with Joss. It looks pretty impressive. It looks like those Avengers really are blowing stuff up. It’s amazing to me.”

So now I start to think of some Schwarzenegger projects that Brian Tyler could do so first I suggest King Conan and ask if he wouldn’t mind stepping in for the great and dearly missed Basil Poledouris.

“Yes, I’ve done that before,” admits Tyler. “I mean, I’ve stepped in to Rambo. I stepped in for Jerry Goldsmith. Both him and Poledouris are pretty big giants. I’d honor their legacy and use their themes too.”

I now ask Tyler if he’s heard who will be directing Terminator: Genisys. He’s now smiling huge. Tyler gave me a look as if he was busted for trying to keep this under wraps.

“Well, the director Alan Taylor, directed Thor 2: The Dark World, I scored that last year,” Tyler tells me with a big grin.

His facial expressions told me he was already in talks – at least with the Terminator director, which he knows well. And as we know, Terminator’s Alan Taylor likes to work with his cast and crew from his earlier projects like Emilia Clarke from his Game of Thrones days.

But there is one obstacle that Tyler hopes to overcome.

“It’s interesting,” Tyler explains, “there are some movies where there are tax incentives to have EU passport composers. You’re supposed to be European (for these tax incentives) so sometimes it affects who gets chosen.”

I wished Brian luck to land the Terminator scoring gig.

“We’ll see,” says the hopeful composer.

Tyler, Taylor and Terminator sure do have a nice ring to it. Tyler, who scored Rambo, Expendables 1-3 and the soon to be Avengers 2, certainly is worthy to do a justice for Schwarzenegger’s 2015 blockbuster event film.

“Yes, it is still percussion for him” (Arnold), Tyler confirms drums best suit the Terminator star. “Mel Gibson’s is like a concerto, actually - It’s totally different. Sly has his big brassy guitar sound. Then you have this whole new thing with Banderas’s character. He’s got this Latin flavor that’s pretty cool and so they all have their different things.”
