Recalling the Legend of Stan Lee, Creator of Muscular Heroes!

I was so honored to have met Stan Lee, the legend who gave us all a universe of imagination and let let people, young and old, feel like action heroes.  During his eventful life, Stan even made major contributions to Pumping Iron stars, Lou Ferrigno and Arnold Schwarzenegger. After Lee helped to created the Hulk for his own solo series "The Incredible Hulk" in 1962, it was later picked up by CBS and aired on November 4, 1977. Not too many people know that the series was first offered to Arnold but he didn’t want to do it so he told the producers to hire Lou Ferrigno. The Incredible Hulk has been one of Marvel's most popular characters for years and is the most relatable character to the bodybuilding community. Stan Lee’s creations even inspired fans to get superhero physiques so you can say he’s made an impact of the world of physical fitness on and off the comic pages.

In 2011, Stan Lee and Schwarzenegger spent a lot of time together to develop a super-spy animated adventure series called The Governator. During this time, I met Stan when he signed my Entertainment Weekly magazine, which featured a big Arnold article with photos of Arnold and Stan discussing their animated project.

In an exclusive interview I had with Stan Lee, he told me all about The Governator and he even told me about his favorite Arnold movies.

"I don’t want to sound like a sycophant” Lee began, "but there hasn’t been a Schwarzenegger movie that I didn’t totally enjoy.  It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I think the Terminator movies have to be at the top of my list. And as for humor, I can’t remember seeing a funnier feature film than “Twins.”

Stan lived a full life to the age of 95. While The Governator animated series was eventually scrapped, Mr. Lee still left a fantastic impression on Arnold.

"Stan Lee created more legends than any of us can count, but his own life was the greatest story he ever wrote. He inspired billions around the world, including me, and I was honored to know him.” – Schwarzenegger
